Homemade Germ-Fighting Quick and Easy Salsa

When the seasons change and sickness is in the air, this salsa recipe I concocted a few years ago is one of my go-to's. Eating lots of garlic is a great way to fight against germs, since it is known for its antibacterial and antiviral properties. I feel like this salsa is both delicious and packed with immune-boosting ingredients. It’s fresh, flavorful, and incredibly simple and way cheaper to make than buying fresh salsa in the store. And, it comes together in just five minutes. Plus, it’s always a hit to take to a party or gathering of friends.

Ingredients:

  • 1 (14 oz) can of diced tomatoes (you might want to consider researching BPA-free options for the cans you use!)

  • A handful of fresh cilantro (We don't have time here to get into all of the health benefits of fresh cilantro, but it's worth a few minutes of your time to Google as well.)

  • Several cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped (I usually go for 2-3)

  • 1 tsp cumin- (This is just a guess, I kind of just dump some in and I actually like a lot of it. You can decide what's right for you.)

  • 1/2 tsp chili powder (optional, also, again, this is a suggested amount, feel free to adjust)

  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika (optional, but highly recommended for the smoky flavor)

  • Salt to taste

  • A splash of lime juice (optional, but nice if you have some on hand in the fridge)

Optional: Use a can of diced tomatoes with jalapeƱos instead of regular diced tomatoes if you prefer more heat. You'll probably want to skip the chili powder if you go this route. It can be fun to add in some red onions or corn or green pepper as well, if you want to switch things up a bit.

Instructions:

  1. Add the can of diced tomatoes, fresh cilantro, peeled and chopped garlic cloves, cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika (if using), and a pinch of salt to a food processor.

  2. Add a splash of lime juice to brighten the flavors.

  3. Blend everything together for about 30 seconds, or until the salsa reaches your desired consistency. You can make it chunky or smooth — it’s up to you!

  4. Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed.

  5. Serve immediately or refrigerate for an hour to let the flavors meld together even more.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Pair with your favorite tortilla chips for a classic snack.

  • Drizzle over quesadillas for a zesty kick.

  • Add it as a topping to tacos, burritos, or even scrambled eggs.

This salsa is as versatile as it is healthy, and it’s packed with nutrients and bold flavors that make it a staple in my kitchen. Whether you’re fighting off germs or simply craving a fresh and flavorful, healthier snack option, this is a great go-to to whip out of your back pocket when needed.
